I, your friendly neighborhood web-servant, had the opportunity to attend Dayton DayCon on April 7th, in Kettering Ohio. The convention had moved to the Shelter community church from it’s location the prior year. I thought it was a much better, roomier, and more conducive environment having games in several rooms instead of one large loft. I was able to take many photos and participate in 3 different types of games.
Not Just minis
I know it’s not a Miniature game, but I do enjoy the opportunity to meet with Aaron John from the Catalyst demo team for some syrupy sugar drink soaked roleplay in the world of Shadowrun. Aaron ran his Shadowrun Demo for three sessions during the convention and is regularly running games for Open Table ministries at Shelter if such is an interest to you.
I also got to set down with Jonathan Hartzel and try out the board game he is developing: Gunfights and Gamblin’Jonathan has designed the game and created the prototype himself and is looking to fund the game on Kick Starter during Origins’s game fair. 4 players divide into two teams to defend or raid a Western Town. This game features resource management, social deduction, and – yes -gambling and gun fighting via dice rolls. This game features resource management, social deduction, and – yes -gambling and gun fighting via dice rolls. His game was top notch, fun, and wonderfully pulpy. Our session game down to a sudden death shootout at the end, where the good guys died suddenly.
It was great to sit down with Jonathan, play his game, network, and discuss marketing and strategy, crowdfunding an a variety of issues. I hope his funding campaign goes well and I’ll be revisiting this when the campaign goes live so we can give him some support.
The Minis: The Cubans Smoke Back.
Before you ask, Yes I do actually play miniatures games too. I joined with HMGS Great Lakes’ Own Mike Demana of First Command Wargames to sit in on his latest Wars of Insurgency Scenario:Smokin’ some Cubans. Wars of Insurgency generally looks at squad level modern skirmish conflict and is top level enough to cover it basically any theater. It’s really easy to play and very engaging. I like the command system will requires you to decide which of your squads will go first and how it “feels” modern compared to their other games.
While Smokin’ Some Cubans did not feature the diplomacy and shifting sides of last years Scenario, That’s My US AID, It was still an enjoyable scenario. Cubans are holding a town in Africa, waiting for relief to come while the South Africans are coming to take the village. I controlled the Cubans and was able to keep the forces at bay long enough to be joyed by my comrades in glorious global revolution.
